A Snippet of Gay Life in Thailand

You can find many such images as you tour the beaches of Sattahip, Thailand – South of Pattaya along the coast. many beaches and tranquil places to stop. I just loved this old boat beached there.
This is my normal painting size of 20 by 30 inch canvas. And when you are down there be sure and stop at Sai Kaew Beach on the military reserve. You can see photos I’ve taken there in many past blog posts.

Here is a 20 by 30 in Digital Watercolor painting using Photoshop. 
Simulating a watercolor version of a pencil drawn scene. The border is for mounting purposes and would be on the sides of the mounting. I am going to try some variations on this theme to break the oil paintings I have been doing. What do you think?

Thanks Yraen for your comments on the Battle Painting. Here is a colorized version of the painting, thank God for Photoshop so I could easily add some color to see what it would look like – It does add some to the overall image but tends to lessen the statue effect. What do you think ? – comments welcome.

If you ever go to Bangkok, be sure and visit “The Ancient City †in Mueang Boran. One of the monuments there is a statue of the battle when King Naresuan liberated Siam from Burmese rule – The Great battle with Phra Maha Uparaja, the Burmese Prince and son of King Nantabureng at Nong Sarai, Suphan Buri Province and declared Siam independence in May 1584 A.D. This is my vision for the final blow in a 20 by 30 inch digital painting – What do you think? – Did I do it justice?

This 26 by 30 inch canvas digital uses a blend of brush strokes to get a rough but detailed painting. I hope I captured the mood and lighting. Developing the face area in deep shadow was the hardest part –

This was a good test of my blending to obtain a 3-dimensional effect. Making the petals of the orchid stand out and give the viewer a depth of field appearance was a real challenge, but I think I did pretty well.

Been working on this 20 by 30 inch canvas painting for a couple of weeks and just did the finishing touches tonight. Also put in the bug for some added interest. I like working on several works at the same time – that way I can switch when bored and still keep my interest in painting.

A beautiful colorful flowering shrub native to Thailand and the surrounding area with a delicate smell. They come pure white to full pink red/yellow. Considered the spa flower, you can find them adorning almost all massage and spa facilities. I found this multi-colored specie just around the corner from my condo.

Going to lunch a few days back, I saw these beautiful hibiscus flowers growing in the small park next to Kad Suan Kaew Shopping Center. Just had to paint them. 29 by 18 inch canvas. Wish there was a white one.

And a painting I did 3 years ago, of a guy fixing a cart in Zhouzhuang. Their version of AAA road side service. My detail was not as good. Digital oil version – I believe I posted it before but this is a larger canvas version. 20 by 25 inch canvas, with the new gesso applied.

In 2003, a year before I retired, I took a trip to China – Hong Kong and Shanghai, visiting a friend there. One spot that really impressed me was Chinese city, Zhouzhuang, “Venice of Shanghai†an hour by train from Shanghai. I got some really great images during this trip and it also got me thinking about retiring to Asia. Zhouzhuang looks like a very old city but I was told by a local that the government just built it that way for tourist. Nevertheless it did give me some great photos. So I thought I would try to paint this old home setting on a watery canal. And a full size blow-up, the bicycle seemed to be the most detailed and difficult to get right The stones are easy, their straight brush marks.

Last years “Chiang Mai Flower Festival†on one float was this great bouquet of flowers, much larger than shown here but I always thought it would make a great painting – So here’s my version – on a 20in by 30in Digital canvas.

Searching my photo collection for images that would make good paintings I came across this one, or actually two, combined to make this image. I love the large green leaf and think the white flower adds to the whole image. The beauty of painting is that I now have full control. What do you think? This is a 20 by 30 inch canvas digital.

Staying with the nature scene, I love this image of a butterfly I captured at Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand, a few years back. painting is on a 22 by 19 inch canvas.
